As you can guess - we have two pieces of bad news. Keeping it sharp:
We've got the basic packaging (O-CARD, Rigid box, Digipack, art card) approved - however for 100 pages, the artbook is proving very difficult due to the nature of the files delivered to us. When Golden Week ends (next week) we hope for a resupply of artworks the licensor approves of but we're currently in limbo there for this month.
The biggest issue is that the delays slow when we can print the artbook too. It takes a bit of time to do the print too so we're definitely running late.
I'd say latest of August 25th just now - but this one's not on us - we started approvals back in March and it's just one of those projects where the committee really cares about the final product. We can respect that and they want the best for you guys too in terms of packaging!
While listed initially as having "My Gurren is Shiny" from the Nintendo DS game, we've been told after asking for the Japanese script to translate it that the licensor has not approved it's use on any other international release. It also was not translated on the version released in America so it's unfortunate but not a surprise.
Any missing extras vs the Ultimate Edition were to our knowledge also not translated - but I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong!
Hopefully more good news than bad here - things are moving and there's not been any hiccups on our side! What we are looking for are for some brave souls to help us out in QC'ing the Gurren Lagann release though - as the English version of the discs are almost ready to go now! If you have time to check it out in HD and feedback within the next month then please could you email us at kerry AT alltheanime DOT com (replace capped words with symbols as appropriate) to discuss.
We're dedicated to delivering the best format possible to you though so watch this space! Look forward to hearing people's thoughts!
And on a final note, don't forget - you can currently pre-order Gurren Lagann Ultimate Edition here.
El Presidente, Anime Ltd
Patema Inverted’s theatrical is round the corner - we’re touring the UK both with family and regular screenings, with some very interesting reviews and coverage in the works it seems here. We couldn’t be happier so far with the support everyone has had for this!
I’ve something else very cool to discuss though today - which is we’ve an amazing opportunity to deliver a Definitive edition for the film on schedule for no later than October MCM Expo. I’d like to talk a bit more about what we have in mind for that and why we’d like to ask for your support for the first ever Kickstarter(.co.uk) campaign for an anime.
HOW DEFINITIVE IS THE DEFINITIVE EDITION?
It’s fair to say we generate Critereon-esque releases often - but in this case what makes it so much more definitive that it requires a Kickstarter to run it?
Well so far we’ve negotiated and factored into the Deluxe edition:
- All the video and commentary extras from the Patema Inverted, Japanese Deluxe Edition. We’ll be translating those and including them on all editions. That’s just part of the job!
- The data from the Japanese booklet, a smaller version of which will go in the Collector’s Edition (26 pages). The full A5 booklet will be produced for the Deluxe edition.
- We’ve secured the right to use the same replica letter from Lagos that comes with the Japanese edition.
- The right to translate, print and include the full Official Design Works for Patema, as covered on Parka Blogs in Japanese.
- We’re designing larger form packaging to hold the Official Design Works, the Letter and the DVD + BD combination pack.
What we’re discussing already with Japan too [as stretch goals if we break the initial target]:
- Fresh, exclusive, illustrations for the Definitive Edition from the original character & background designers.
- The soundtrack as released in the Japanese Collector’s Edition.
- Additional written content if possible.
Basically - we loved this film so much we want you to get the absolute max out of the edition.
WHAT’S THE CATCH - WHY KICKSTARTER?
Basically this is the kicker - printing a book isn’t cheap, nor is large form packaging or putting everything in the box! It costs actually more than a set like Durarara!! which had 4 x BD50s (which are expensive++)!
This would mean a retail price on Amazon would be £84.99 as a minimum - which as we all know could mean massive discounts, or it could mean you get £4.99 off the amount.
Simply put - we can’t take the risk on that as this kind of release is a lot of time, effort and cost so to leave it up to chance is a very bad idea. So we’re opening the idea up as a Kickstarter instead to give everyone their chance to support the idea (or not) as you please and give you the chance to buy it at £40 via Kickstarter (or £35 to 200 very lucky early birds…).
This means - if you help us make it happen, you get the benefit of it exceptionally cheap even vs what retailers would offer it at. Plus you get it before it hits retail!
DOES THIS IMPACT ON MAI MAI MIRACLE AT ALL?
We’re a product company - so it doesn’t impact at all on Mai Mai Miracle. Separate product managers - I’m taking this project on personally as it’s actually pretty close to me so you don’t have to worry there.
WHEN WILL WE GET IT?
We’re shooting for end of summer or early Autumn - so September is pretty realistic on this front! Depends on how long translation of the book takes us though - but definitely before the year is out!
WHEN CAN WE SEE WHAT THE REWARD TIERS WILL LOOK LIKE?
Take a looksee now at this URL! You can even have it remind you when the campaign goes live!
All feedback and questions welcome! Plan is to launch on May 2nd alongside the theatrical launch!
Firstly - thank you to anyone who has supported the Durarara!! release so far - it's greatly appreciated and we know a lot of you have been looking forward to this.
As many of you know - the discs for this release were authored in Australia by the distributor there for their release and we piggy-backed on it for this project. By the time they were delivered to us, the project had been completed for some time with no reports of errors reaching us from there. So we went ahead to press discs - which is when we receive final checks usually (as stock is being made).
Since it hit reviewers, we've been made aware of a litany of problems though including some pretty important ones with subtitles dropping. Also a lack of signs track despite there being one on the original US release.
IN DEFENCE OF AUSTRALIA - QC'S A PAIN IN THE BEHIND!
To defend Australia - how most studios (even small ones) work is that they pay the authoring house to QC the work and they normally flag any problems. This works 95% of the time and is pretty understandable as a full QC takes 2 x the run of the show.
From sore experience, Anime Ltd actually pays for one QC and we do a full QC in house too. The benefits are twofold nowadays - the biggest of which is we catch serious errors (Tiger & Bunny and Garden of Words being good examples of cleared product and Outlaw Star we caught the errors). Secondly it means if our team hasn't seen a show (not everyone's been in the anime business for 10+ years like I have) then they get a chance to watch it which helps them talk to you all about them!
For materials too - you have to keep in mind you can only work with what you have and as the project was so old, they had to source the materials again. Now some studios will only accept subtitles in the correct file formats - which also explains the lack of signs track.
WHY NOT JUST FIX IT AND ISSUE REPLACEMENTS?
Well the standard would be - we return to our authoring house hacked off at the errors that passed QC, they'd fix it and we'd put it on the next print run. No extra cost from the authoring house but extra cost for replication and new glass masters obviously - but problem fixed (about to be that with Cowboy Bebop).
The issue is - as this project was done and dusted last year for Siren with no real notes, it's passed by. This means it will cost even more to re-author the discs again.
SO WHAT IS ANIME LTD GOING TO DO?
We've taken the decision to re-author the discs for fans in the UK! We don't want anyone feeling unhappy and anyone who orders it will get replacement discs per show from us that needs them as soon as it's done.
Nobody likes a broken product on the market and we're not happy about that, nor is Siren in Australia for that matter.
In the meantime, as it makes sense to use the same materials to create the DVD - we'll wait and post a new release date for the DVD as soon as it's done. Tentatively it'll be all good to go in time for Durarara!! Season 2 though.
While we're there - we'll also work to add signs tracks to each disc as well. Can't say fairer than that really!
Hope this helps and in the meantime - if you're eager to support us (or a fan of the dub who is unaffected by the biggest issues with the subtitles) you can knowing you'll be first in line for revised copies towards the end of this year.
