Summer Wars comes to 4K home video this April

As we continue to spin things back up, we’re not quite at the point of returning to full-blown monthly Newswire duty (but sooooon, we hear lots of you asking!) – but that doesn’t mean we have nothing to talk about, and tonight we’re very excited to show you our next big pre-order release, as we continue to bring Mamoru Hosoda’s back catalogue to your home in 4K UHD Blu-ray form!
Hot on the heels of our release of the emotional but wonderful Wolf Children, next up it’s time for the classic Summer Wars to get its all-new 4K release – so grab your phone, get your family to gather round, and let’s take a look at what we have in store for you!
Summer Wars 4K Deluxe Edition
Let’s start out with our premium, Collector’s Edition release – there’s a lot to enjoy with this one!
From the visionary director of Belle, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Wolf Children comes the story of an ordinary family going to extraordinary lengths to avert the impending cyber apocalypse!
Kenji is your typical teenage misfit. He’s good at math, bad with girls, and spends most of his time hanging out in the all-powerful, online community known as OZ. His second life is the only life he has until the girl of his dreams, Natsuki, hijacks him for a starring role as a fake fiancé at her family reunion. Things only get stranger from there. A late-night email containing a cryptic mathematic riddle leads to the unleashing of a rogue AI intent on using the virtual word of OZ to destroy the real world, literarily. As Armageddon looms on the horizon, Kenji and his new family set aside their differences and band together to save the worlds they inhabit in this near-perfect blend of social satire and science fiction.
In keeping with our Wolf Children Deluxe Edition, the main packaging for this edition features a rigid slipcase – featuring a clean, new piece of promotional artwork first seen with our theatrical release last year – enclosed with an O-card complete with the title treatment and typical release information.
Within this, you’ll find a Digipak which holds no fewer than four discs. First of all, there’s the film itself on 4K UHD Blu-ray, providing you the film in a 4K HDR presentation to enjoy the film as you’ve never seen it before. Then, we have the feature on Blu-ray, plus a second bonus Blu-ray packed to the brim with extra features, including interviews with director Mamoru Hosoda and the Japanese voice cast for the film.
Last but certainly not least, this edition also features the film’s Original Soundtrack on CD, so you can enjoy Summer Wars’ delightful soundtrack in its own right whenever you like.
Rounding things out, we do of course have a number of physical extras to offer. First up, we have a set of five regular art cards featuring a number of iconic key visuals from the film, backed up by a single plastic art card, featuring King Kazuma and Kenji in their Oz avatar forms. On top of all this, also included is a fabric replica Jinnouchi family banner (with dimensions of 30cm x 90cm), allowing you to recreate Natsuki’s pose in that classic visual from the film yourself!

Summer Wars 4K Steelbook
Next up is one for the Steelbook collectors among you, as of course – much like Wolf Children – we’ll be giving Summer Wars the Steelbook treatment too.
This Steelbook edition is adorned with that striking, kinetic image of King Kazuma, and inside that Steelbook casing you’ll find two discs, containing the film on 4K UHD and regular Blu-ray respectively.
A J-card sits around the Steelbook for all of the information about this Limited Edition release.
The Summer Wars Steelbook will be available across all retailers – pre-orders with other retail outlets will commence next week, and open at our own online store on March 19th, with a retail release date of 27th April 2026.

Summer Wars Standard Editions
Needless to say, we’ll also be releasing the film in standard edition Blu-ray and DVD formats, so here’s a look at these!
Both our Blu-ray and DVD editions are single-disc affairs with the film in their relevant format, plus both versions also sport a reversible cover as you can see below.
Both of these editions will be available across all good retails, with pre-orders launching next week, and pre-orders opening at our AllTheAnime.com store from Thursday 19th March.
