Top Sellers – 2012
February 4, 2013 · 0 comments
We’re big fans of open data here – it’s pretty hard to follow charts for anime too as they’re not easily available digitally so we thought we’d do something fun. From now on every month we’ll be posting up the top ten sellers of the month, regardless of the distributor.
Why do it if it’s not all Anime Limited titles in the top (if ever in the charts)? We think it’s interesting to get a picture of the market size just now.
For now though we’re going to look back at 2012 though:
POSITION | TITLE | UNITS | DISTRIBUTOR |
1 | ARRIETTY | >40,000 | CANAL UK |
2 | ORIGIN – SPIRITS OF THE PAST | >25,000 | MANGA UK |
3 | THE GIRL WHO LEAPT THROUGH TIME | >15,000 | MANGA UK |
4 | MY NEIGHBOUR TOTORO | >10,000 | CANAL UK |
5 | SPIRITED AWAY | >10,000 | CANAL UK |
6 | HOWL’S MOVING CASTLE | >10,000 | CANAL UK |
7 | PONYO | >5,000 | CANAL UK |
8 | DEVIL MAY CRY | >5,000 | MANGA UK |
9 | GHOST IN THE SHELL 2.0 | >5,000 | MANGA UK |
10 | AKIRA | >5,000 | MANGA UK |
If you pare that back to reveal the top sellers which were released in 2012:
POSITION | TITLE | UNITS | DISTRIBUTOR |

2 | POKEMON – DESTINY DEOXYS – THE MOVIE | >5,000 | CANAL UK |
3 | TEKKEN – BLOOD VENGEANGE | >5,000 | KAZE |
4 | DRAGON BALL Z – SEASON 1 | >2,500 | MANGA |

7 | NARUTO SHIPPUDEN – BOX SET 9 | >2,500 | MANGA |
8 | DRAGON BALL Z – SEASON 3 | >2,500 | MANGA |
9 | NARUTO SHIPPUDEN – BOX SET 10 | >2,500 | MANGA |
10 | BLEACH THE MOVIE 3 – FADE TO BLACK | >2,000 | KAZE |
In the interests of fairness over both of these we’ve excluded the exact sales numbers and just stated what it was over – meaning it literally could be anywhere over that number. It’s not our place to give out exact numbers for non Anime Ltd works but we wanted to give you an impression of size of market here in the UK.
We’ll be putting together the top 10 sellers of January shortly too for people with ranking only. Who knows, when time allows we may also dig a bit further back to historical sales over the last few years in the UK market too.
