rayearth06 copyIf you’re someone who is more of the ‘old school’ anime crowd here in the UK, it’s quite likely you will be familiar with (or at least have heard of) the name Magic Knight Rayearth. Or perhaps just referred to as Rayearth.

A lot of people were very excited when we revealed we’d be bringing the entire television series to home video for the first-time in the UK – worth noting from here before anyone gets confused, previously the 3 episode OVA, Rayearth was released in the UK but not the original 49 episodes TV series; more on that in a few moments. And today is the day we can finally tell you what we have planned!

So sit back and get ready because Magic Knight Rayearth is coming to Blu-ray starting with Part 1 on 27th July, with Part 2 to follow on 24th August.

Just to cut the chase now, we’ve got a special limited time offer on pre-order Part 1 right now. So if you want to jump straight to ordering that, click on the link below to head to our AllTheAnime online shop. (Pre-orders for Part 2 will launch closer to date of release.)

ABOUT
MAGIC KNIGHT RAYEARTH

Magic Knight Rayearth
Magic Knight Rayearth

Based on the manga by the world famous, CLAMP

Synopsis (TV series): Hikaru Shidou, Umi Ryuuzaki, and Fuu Hououji are three regular high school girls. While on a field trip to the Tokyo Tower, the three girls’ minds are on anything but different worlds filled with magic and wonder. That is, until Princess Emeraude, the Pillar of Cephiro, cries out for the Magic Knights to save her world – and that just happens to be those three!

The girls must learn to control the magic they suddenly possess, drive back the monsters that plague the land, revive the Rune Gods that have been sealed away, and then fight against the High Priest Zagato, who has kidnapped Princess Emeraude. It’s the only way they can return home, for willpower influences Cephiro, and it is the Princess’s will that the three girls become the Magic Knights of legend, and save her world.

WHAT DO YOU HAVE PLANNED FOR YOUR RELEASES?

rayearth01 copySo, to begin with I feel we need to set the scene and also clarify a particular detail. We are going to be releasing the entire 49-episode TV series on Blu-ray, BUT, we’re also excited to confirm that we also have secured the rights to be able to include the 3-episode OVA, Rayearth as part of our release as well! So that will be included in the Part 2 release as a bonus DVD – as they’ve never been released on Blu-ray, so those materials don’t exist. More on this specifically when we talk about Part 2 below in a few moments.

So, with that in mind, we will be releasing two Blu-ray Collector’s Editions sets, starting with Part 1 on 27th July, and Part 2 following on 24th August.

Let’s focus on Part 1 specifically first.

MAGIC KNIGHT RAYEARTH PART 1

Format: Blu-ray Ltd Collector’s Edition
Release date: 27th July 2020
Cat. No.: ANI0497

*Suggested retail price is the maximum price a retailer could charge for the product. However, once retailers factor in their own discounts, the regular price will be cheaper.

For Part 1, it will come packed in a rigid case showing off some of the glorious artwork created for the series. Inside that will be a digipack to hold the three Blu-ray discs plus, a 20-page art booklet. The art booklet will include artwork created for the series!

With that in mind, here’s what a visual of what the set the will look like –

Over the three Blu-ray discs you will get episodes 1-27 with both English and original Japanese with English subtitles viewing options. On-disc extras include Next Episode Previews, Bumpers, Recaps and Omake Endings.

And for those of you curious, here’s what both sides of the rigid case will look like

So that’s what you can expect with Part 1, now let’s move onto Part 2…

MAGIC KNIGHT RAYEARTH PART 2

Product: Magic Knight Rayearth: Part 2
Format: Blu-ray Ltd Collector’s Edition
Release date: 24th August 2020
Cat. No.: ANI0521
Suggested Retail Price*: £59.99

*Suggested retail price is the maximum price a retailer could charge for the product. However, once retailers factor in their own discounts, the regular price will be cheaper.

Following in the style of of Part 1, Part 2 will also come with the contents packed inside a rigid case. Inside that will be a digipack to hold the four discs, 3 x Blu-ray + 1 x DVD. More on those in a moment. Additionally you will also find 5 character specific art cards inside too!

Here’s a visual of what the set will look like.

When it comes to the discs, across the three Blu-ray discs will be episodes 28-49 of the TV series with English and original Japanese with English subtitles viewing options.

rayearth03 copyExtras wise there will be: Next Episode Previews; Bumpers; Recaps & Omake Endings; English Pilot Openings & Endings Collection; Trailers & Promotional Spots; Interviews with English Cast & Crew; English Outtakes & Greetings; Production Art Gallery; Storyboards; Mokona’s Song and even an Episode 49 English Dub Director Commentary.

BUT, there’s more. We touched on this earlier, but there is a bonus DVD disc included in this. The DVD disc will contain the 3-episode OVA, Rayearth, that was created after the TV series. (As a point of reference, this is most likely the anime version of Rayearth that old school UK fans will be most familiar with.)

Though these three episodes are a retelling of the story, there are actually some big differences between this and the original TV series in terms of look, see image left for reference, and events in the story.

As no Blu-ray assets for these exist anywhere in the world, these will be presented on a DVD disc. But we’re also happy to say that it will include viewing options in both Japanese with English subtitles AND the English dub! (If you’re someone who had the old DVD release from Manga UK back in the day, the one that’s been out-of-print for likely over 15 years at this point; it’s the same dub as on there!)

What this means is that we’re genuinely able to offer UK fans a complete Rayearth anime experience; this is something we’re super happy about.

I think its great that you're picking up and releasing old school anime on Blu Ray. Plenty of people need to watch the old school anime shows to see how they compare to modern era anime and because they're pretty good. I'd personally love to see Infinite Ryvius picked up on Blu Ray but I don't believe anyone has remastered it.
