Gundam_example_4[UPDATED: 22ND OCTOBER]

Earlier this year we had the pleasure of announcing that we have launched a partnership with Sunrise in Japan to bring various Gundam releases to the UK starting with the original Mobile Suit Gundam series! This will mark the first time series is getting released in the UK and to make the opportunity extra sweet for fans we’re able to do this on Blu-ray!

Since then we know a lot of you have been wanting a preview of what to expect with our release. A few months ago we revealed that the first 1000 units of Part 1 (out from 30th November) will come with a UK Exclusive box to store both parts of the series. Again we want to reiterate that this UK Exclusive box is NOT limited to any one retailer. No matter where you pre-order it you will receive the box – this version will be the only version available on day of release.

And if you’re coming to MCM London Comic Con we’re happy to confirm you’ll have the first opportunity to own this set as we’ll have advance copies available at our booth across the weekend. And yes, it will be with the Collector’s Box as well!

Today we want to give you a preview of what will be on the discs themselves, provide with you a few little tidbits you should be aware of and show you the finished product.

First of all, let’s give you some tidbits about this release in general.

Gundam_example_2~ This is a remastered release of a series first broadcast in the 1970s
With any anime we are delighted to see when it’s possible to have a series or film showcased in the best quality quality and HD remasters are something we’re big fans of, but Mobile Suit Gundam is a slightly different animal. Most HD remasters that made it to the UK have been of far more recent properties, for example a series that was made in the last 15-20 years, but the original Mobile Suit Gundam first aired on Japanese television back in April of 1979. The style of animation has developed so much in the decades following Mobile Suit Gundam that for a first time viewer it can almost be a sort culture shock. Also the way animation was preserved back in the 70s was far different to how it done today.

~ This is a dual language release.
Our release of the series contains both the original Japanese audio with subtitles and the English language dub. Yes, some of you might be surprised to hear this but the series did have a brief run on television in the USA so the entire series was dubbed into English. You get both that and the original Japanese audio included in our release.

Gundam_example_1~ The original Mobile Suit Gundam series was NOT animated in 16:9
As the original Mobile Suit Gundam aired in the late 70s, this series was not animated in widescreen (16:9). This means that when watching the series will be pillarboxed, meaning it will be displayed with black bars at the side of the screen to retain the original aspect ratio (4:3) rather than stretching the image or using other techniques to make it into widescreen.

We appreciate there are a generation of fans who might not be as aware of this fact so we like to make mention of it. Pillarboxing was also utilised for our release of Cowboy Bebop and is also the case for the Season 1 and Season 2: Fumoffu episodes of Full Metal Panic in our Ultimate Edition release.

~ One episode is omitted
We’ve made no secret about this but we do want to take time to reiterate that for international releases of the series there is one episode that has been omitted. This has been the case for all English language releases of the series in other territories as well. You’ll be happy to hear this will not effect your enjoyment of the show whatsoever.

~ On-disc Extras
As well as episodes 1-21 of the series our Blu-ray release of Mobile Suit Gundam Part 1 does contain some extras. It includes the clean opening and closing title sequences along with some Japanese DVD commercials for the series.

With our preview of what you should knew about our release concluded we now want to give you a glimpse of the finished product.

Full disclosure, we’re currently waiting for the Limited Edition Box component to be delivered. As mentioned we WILL have them to accompany the copies of Mobile Suit Gundam Part 1 purchased at our booth this weekend, so if you want to purchase it at our stand don’t worry you won’t miss out. (Obviously we’ll share pictures of the box as appropriate.)

With the above in mind here’s a glimpse of our Mobile Suit Gundam Part 1 release:
