The film will be available to add to your collection on 9th March, so today we’re going to be showing you what to expect from our Blu-ray/DVD Ltd. Collector’s Edition release, and we’ll also give you a glimpse at the standard Blu-ray and DVD versions too.
And if you aren’t aware of what the film is, have no fear as we’ll give you a quick introduction to that as well! Read on below for all the details.
ABOUT PENGUIN HIGHWAY

© 2018 Tomihiko Morimi, KADOKAWA / Penguin Highway Production Committee
An adaptation of a book written Tomohiko Morimi (Night is Short Walk on Girl, The Tatami Galaxy) and is the first feature film by Studio Colorido!
Synopsis: “Aoyama is a boy in the 4th grade. Every day he learns about the world, and he writes what he’s learned into his notebook. He’s smart, and he studies hard every day, so there’s no telling how great he’ll grow up to be!
He’s friends with “The Lady”, a young woman who works at his dentist’s office. The Lady finds his intelligence, his grown – up attitude, and the fact that he can be a bit of a brat to be very cute.
One day, penguins appear in the suburbs where Aoyama lives. These penguins appear out of nowhere far from the sea, and then simply disappear. Where did they come from and where did they go?
Aoyama begins his research in order to solve the mysteries of the penguins.
One day he sees the Lady throw a can of soda into the air, and watches it transform into a penguin. As he stares in astonishment, the Lady gives him a challenge.
“Try and solve this mystery. Well? Do you think you can do it?”
What’s the relationship between the lady and the penguins? Can he solve the mystery? This is the story of a slightly mysterious and completely unforgettable summer experienced by a little boy”

WHAT WAS PLANNED FOR THE RELEASE?
Our Limited Collector’s Edition release comes packed in a rigid case, showcasing some of the fabulous artwork created for the film on either side. Inside the rigid case you’ll find a digipack to hold the Blu-ray and DVD discs – which contains the film with both English and original Japanese with English subtitles viewing options.
Additionally inside you’ll find a whopping 300-page full colour storyboard book of the film! What do we mean by full colour, you may be wondering? Well it’s pretty simple; traditionally storyboards are in black and white, or not coloured in. In the case of Penguin Highway, there are elements of the storyboard where colour was factored in! So where there was colour in the storyboards, that’s being replicated in our storyboard book too!
And finally there’s also a numbered certificate of authenticity included as well, so you can be the envy of your friends you that own this set!

And now what you’ve really been waiting for, photos! You can click on them to enlarge them too, if you want.
First up, the Blu-ray/DVD Collector’s Edition set
- First of all the rigid case with cellophane around it. Note that the BBFC logo on the front there is a sticker on the cellophane, not on the actual case.
- The reverse side of the rigid case, cellophane around it. The info sheet (aka, onsert) you see here is underneath the cellophane, but is removable. (more on that to follow)
- All four spines of the rigid case, cellophane around it. (Random note, the blue mark you see in the third picture down, underneath side of the case, is just a pen mark on the cellophane, not on the actual product itself.)
- Now with cellophane removed, the front of the rigid case!
- With cellophane removed, the reverse side of the rigid case. I mentioned this onsert was removable. It’s attached with some glue dots to the rigid case. You simply need to peel them away gently to remove.
- Once you’ve removed the onsert, you reveal this wonderful art!
- With cellophane removed, all four sides of the rigid case.
- With that all being said, let’s get inside!
- First of the all the digipack housing the discs. We have the outer side (top) and inner side (bottom)
- Now a look at the inner side with discs in place (top) and removed (bottom)
- A closer look at the Blu-ray disc
- and a closer look a the DVD disc.
- You’ll also find a numbered certificate with this set! Let us know what number you got!
- And now onto the 300-page storyboard book. Here’s the front of it.
- And here’s the back of it.
- We’re going to show you some pages, but so as to avoid spoilers we’re not going to be showing you many. That being said, so you can make some comparisons and perhaps appreciate this a tad more, some of the pages we’re showing here are taken from the preview clips (earlier in this post) above. So you can get an idea for how it all worked out in the actual film..
- One of the unique things we talked about with this storyboard book is that it’s full colour, meaning that some of the actual storyboards are in colour rather than just black and white like they traditionally are.
- This is a moment from near the start of the film.
- This is also taken from a scene early on in the dentist; you watch part of this in the “You Caught The Disease?” clip above!
- You can see various different elements highlighted in this particular scene
- This page is taken from one of the preview clip “It’s a Penguin” above!
- And this is the continuation of that same scene.
- And for those curious, here’s the front, back and spine of the book in one image.
Like we said, with the storyboard book it’s the entire film over 300-pages! It’s a really unique item we’ve been able include with this so we hope you enjoy going through it!
And for those of you opting for the standard Blu-ray or DVD versions, here’s a quick look at those for you –
- The front of the standard Blu-ray
- With this you get two sleeve designs. The default design (top) and the alternate design (bottom)
- A closer look at the disc included with the standard Blu-ray
- Now the front fo the standard DVD
- With this you get the default sleeve design (top) and an alternate design (bottom)
- A closer look at the disc included with the standard DVD.
With all that being said, that concludes this unboxing of Penguin Highway! We hope you’re looking forward to adding it to your collection.
Signing out~!
